No, the term does not refer to the moons colour but to the rare occurrence of a second Full Moon appearing in a month.

- Blue moon has few other names such as the Green Corn Moon , the Grain Moon ,Full Red Moon etc..
- A full moon appears every 29.5 days .So, there are usually 12 moons in a year.
- But some years have 13, with one month having 2 Full Moon nights.
- July 2015 has two full moons. One on 2nd and 31st .
- The last blue moon was on Aug 2012
- And the next will happen in January 2018.
